How to compress a PDF without uploading it

By Shaurya Yadav. Last updated 5 November 2026.

Most PDF websites send your file to their computers, work on it there and send it back. That is a poor fit for mark sheets, ID cards and bank papers. A PDF can be compressed inside your own browser instead, so the file never leaves your device.

Why some PDFs shrink and others do not

A PDF from a scanner or phone camera is really a stack of big pictures, so making those pictures lighter saves a lot. A PDF that is mostly typed text is already small, and it may not get any smaller. There is no way to know for sure before you try.

What you give up

Pixel PDF compresses by redrawing each page as a lighter JPG picture at the quality you pick, then building a new PDF from those pictures. The catch is that text becomes part of the picture, so it can no longer be selected or searched. Keep your original file, and only send the compressed copy where size matters.

Step by step

  • Open Compress PDF and choose your file.
  • Pick a strength, or set a size limit such as 200 KB if a form asks for one.
  • Compress it and download the new file. If it would not be smaller, the tool says so and you should keep your original.
  • Zoom in and read the smallest text before you submit, because a very low size limit can make small print hard to read.

When not to compress

  • When someone needs to copy or search the text, such as a resume checked by software. Compressing turns the text into a picture, so it can no longer be read that way.
  • When the file is already under the limit. Every compression loses a little quality, so there is nothing to gain.
  • When small print has to stay sharp, such as a mark sheet with tiny details. Use the gentlest setting that fits, then check it by zooming in.
  • On your only copy. Compress a copy and keep the original safe, because the lost detail cannot be brought back.

If it is still too big

  • Remove pages you do not need, using Split PDF or Organize, then compress what is left.
  • Scan again at a lower setting. Colour scans are much heavier than black and white, so use black and white if the form accepts it.
  • If you have many photos to put in one PDF, make each picture smaller first.

Limits to know about

Everything happens in your browser's memory, so very big files (over 150 MB in total) are refused, and phones may struggle sooner than computers. PDFs locked with a password have to be unlocked first.
